It’s been great for your health to talk about mushroom coffee lately. It comes in nice packaging and is marketed with confidence. The promise of “smoother energy, sharper focus, and fewer crashes” really appeals to anyone who has ever felt jittery and wired after drinking three cups of regular coffee. But there is one type of product that does very well when it is brand new. When something is new, the pros get to talk more and the cons can be quiet for a while longer.

Things that are hard about mushroom coffee are beginning to become clear.

The biggest complaint about mushroom coffee is that it’s expensive. To be clear, a bag of good regular coffee costs about the same as two to three times as much. That quickly adds up if you do it every day. The extra cost is said to be worth it because the mushroom extracts work. For example, Lion’s Mane helps you concentrate, Reishi eases stress, and Chaga boosts your immune system. But those health claims haven’t been proven in large-scale human trials on the blended coffee form, no matter how interesting the research behind them may be. It’s possible that the compounds will still be there after drying, extracting, and brewing in doses that matter. They might not, though. At this point, no one has made a firm decision about which is true.

People who drink mushroom coffee on a regular basis often say that it makes their digestion hurt. Some people have problems with the complex carbohydrates in the functional mushrooms used in these blends. These problems include bloating, nausea, loose stools, and general stomach unease. This is especially true for people who are new to medicinal mushrooms or who are already sensitive to foods that ferment in the gut. People who have IBS seem to be more likely to get sick. It’s funny, because some brands advertize that their coffee is better for your stomach than regular coffee.

The Chaga mushroom issue is unique and needs to be talked about on its own. One of the most common types of mushrooms used in these blends, chaga, has a lot of oxalates. Oxalates are chemicals that can cause kidney stones if you eat too many of them, and if you eat too many of them all the time, it can damage kidney tissue over time. This probably isn’t a big risk for most healthy people who drink one cup once in a while. If you have had kidney stones in the past or already have kidney problems, you might want to talk to your doctor before starting to drink a Chaga-based blend every day. It’s not always easy to find that information on product labels; the type of mushroom is often hidden in small print near the list of ingredients.

Another area where things get more serious is when it comes to medication interactions. Researchers have found that reishi mushrooms can change how blood clots, which is a concern for people who take blood thinners or anticoagulants. Cordyceps may lower blood sugar, which is important for people with diabetes who take medicine. A few types of medicinal mushrooms seem to also affect drugs that weaken the immune system. All of this isn’t made clear in the marketing materials. When these brands advertize these products, they tend to be more excited about the benefits and less vocal about the risks. That gap makes it a little hard to sit down.

There have also been a few reported cases of liver damage from eating a lot of reishi mushrooms for a long time, especially when they were mixed with other drugs. These events don’t happen very often, so it’s not fair to say that mushroom coffee always puts your liver at risk. However, the long-term safety profile of taking medicinal mushrooms every day has not been fully studied in humans, and the argument that “it’s natural, so it’s safe” is not a good one.

People who drink mushroom coffee in the afternoon should be aware that it can make it hard to sleep. Even though it only has about half as much caffeine as regular coffee, it can still keep you awake if you drink it at the wrong time. And Reishi, which is often sold as a sleep- and stress-relieving herb, has been said to wake up some people instead of calm them down. It’s not clear if that’s because of personal variation or because of the dose.

In and of itself, none of these things make mushroom coffee unsafe. A morning cup probably won’t hurt healthy adults who don’t take any medications or have a history of kidney problems. But it seems like the wellness industry around this product has moved faster than the evidence, and there is a bigger difference between what’s being said and what’s been proven than most of the branding suggests. It makes sense to think about the bad things that might happen before committing to a daily habit.
