It’s not often that a food that most people think of as a treat is used in a serious study on aging. But that’s pretty much what happened when King’s College London researchers wrote about theobromine, a natural compound found in cocoa, and how it seems to be linked to how quickly people age.
The study, which came out in December 2025 in the journal Aging, looked at biological age markers in the blood of almost 2,000 people from the UK and Germany. A simple but surprising main finding was that people whose blood had higher amounts of theobromine always looked biologically younger than their actual age. Not a lot, and not in a way that makes it easy to draw simple conclusions. But the pattern was the same enough in different tests of aging for researchers to notice it.
Biological age is not the same as chronological age. It doesn’t just show how long someone has been alive; it also shows how well their body is working at the cellular level. Two different ways were used by the researchers to figure it out. In the first one, scientists looked at small changes in DNA called chemicals that happen over time and show how fast the body is aging. The second one looked at telomere length. Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes. As people age, these caps get shorter, which is linked to a number of diseases that come with getting older. Both ways of doing things led to the same outcome.
Theobromine is an alkaloid, which is a type of plant compound. It has the same chemicals as caffeine, but its effects on the body are softer and last longer. This chemical is naturally found in cocoa, which is why dark chocolate, which has more cocoa, has significant amounts of it. There is also some theobromine in coffee, but not nearly as much as in tea. People in the study who had higher levels of the compound in their blood probably ate more foods that contained cocoa, but the study was only observational and didn’t directly look at diet.
The proposed mechanism is what makes the finding so interesting to researchers. Compounds found in plants, such as theobromine, seem to affect aging by changing gene expression, or which genes are turned on or off at the cellular level. Epigenetics is a field of study that looks into how genes are affected by aging. The team from King’s College thinks that theobromine may be changing the way cells work that controls gene activity that is linked to health and longevity. Even the researchers are careful to say that they don’t know exactly how the compound causes this effect.
Author of the study and professor of epigenomics at King’s College London, Jordana Bell, made it clear that the results don’t mean you should eat more dark chocolate. Even though the compound might be doing something interesting, dark chocolate also has sugar, fat, and other compounds that are bad for your health. According to the researchers, they also want to know if theobromine works by itself or with other chemicals in cocoa, especially polyphenols, which are known to be good for your heart and reduce inflammation.
A lot of researchers think that these results raise more questions than they answer, which is likely the right response. Ramy Saad, the lead researcher and a doctor in clinical genetics at King’s College London, said that the discovery was exciting because there is still so much to learn. More research is already being planned to find out if changing the amount of theobromine a person eats really changes biological markers of age or if the current link just shows something different about people who eat more cocoa.
Researchers who aren’t part of the study have warned people to be careful. Dimitrios Koutoukidis, an associate professor at the University of Oxford, said that the observational design means it can’t tell us what happens when diet changes the amount of theobromine in the body. That being said, correlation and causation are still two different things, and this study only shows correlation.
Still, it’s really interesting to see how this line of research grows. Some chemicals found in common foods may affect the epigenome in important ways. This idea is getting harder to throw out. There is still no word on whether or not theobromine will ever be useful in anti-aging medicine. For now, it’s something that needs to be looked at more closely and maybe paired with dark chocolate in a more thoughtful way.
